Faux Enamel Reversible Pendant

Reproduce the vivid color and luminescence of enamel on textured metal using colored pencils and liquid polymer clay. Hand-color your choice of images, transfer with liquid polymer, then finish with metal leaf for maximum brilliance. Your framed transfers will be formed into a reversible pendant with dazzling color and a play of light to rival enamel.

Students Supply:
Work surface, pasta machine, clay blade, acrylic roller, 4 oz. black polymer clay, translucent liquid polymer clay, colored pencils (Crayola preferred), thick white glue (Gem-Tac or Aleene’s thick designer glue), metal leaf, texturing comb. Optional: round-nose and chain-nose pliers, wire cutter.

Instructor supplies:
Class handout, lotus images for transferring, glass baking surface, sandpaper, wire findings, satin cord, tassel.

Cellular Specimen Pendants

Assemble your own cell-like specimen under glass. Mimic cellular structures using various compound canes. Translucent clay used in your canes adds depth; glass microscope slides provide the finishing touch for the two specimen pendants you will create. Holding your finished specimen up to the light will reveal spectacular see-through effects!

Students Supply:
Work surface, pasta machine, clay blade, acrylic roller, polymer clay - 2oz. translucent, 2 oz. each of 3 other colors in light, medium and dark tones, plastic wrap, waxed paper, Chainnose pliers, roundnose pliers, wire (16 or 20 ga., any color), cyanoacrylate glue .

Instructor supplies:
Class handout, Microscope slides, nylon cord, finishing beads.

Orbital Bangle Bracelets

Unique bangle bracelets orbit your wrist with loops and swirls and planetary beads. Guitar strings are embellished with your handmade beads in faux jade, faux ivory, and black polymer clay to add weight and visual interest. The two bracelets you make will be striking on their own; worn stacked they’ll be simply stunning.

Students supply:
Round-nose and chain-nose pliers, safety glasses, work surface, pasta machine, clay blade, 4 oz. translucent clay, 2 oz. black clay, 2 oz. ecru clay, small amount of green clay.

Instructor supplies:
Class handout, guitar strings

Design in Nine: Design Theory for Polymer Clay Artists
(Two-day workshop - photo is representative sample.)

Have you ever wondered why some pieces work and others just… don’t? Or thought something was missing, but couldn’t decide what? Or worse, ruined a piece by not knowing when to stop? Learn to identify, create, and discuss finished work in terms of design principles like balance, symmetry, and unity. Elements of design including line, value, texture, color, and more will be explored as you embellish small tiles with clay. This class was specifically created for the polymer clay artist looking for a hands-on approach to learning design.

Students Supply:
Pasta machine, clay blade, acrylic roller or brayer, work surface, 4 oz. black polymer clay, 4 oz. each coordinating colors in light, medium, and dark.
Optional: texturing tools, shaped cutters, carving tools, canes.

Instructor supplies:
Detailed handout covering elements and principles of design.

Also covered are fool-proof methods for joining clay and other materials, interesting options for making your own findings and professional tips and tricks for finishing your pieces to the last detail.

Students Supply:
Polymer clay beads, 16- or 20-gauge wire, round-nose and chain-nose pliers, wire cutter, small metal nail file or needle file, 400-grit sandpaper. (Optional: found objects, metal tubing, ball-peen hammer, steel block.)
